Richard Martin

Richard heads up our advisory and dispute resolution work as well as leading on our mental health awareness training.

He joined byrne∙dean in 2013 following a 20 year employment law career with city and international law firms. Having trained with Gouldens he became a partner in that firm and then an equity partner in worldwide firm Jones Day upon the merger of those firms in 2003. Subsequently he joined Speechly Bircham as a partner, becoming head of the 26 strong employment law team and serving on the firm’s management committee.

In 2011 Richard suffered a serious mental breakdown, spent time in hospital and undertook a lengthy recovery process. He has now graduated on the Mastered programme at Meyler Campbell, undertaken foundation level studies in psychotherapy and counselling and is passionate about the need to bring awareness of mental wellbeing to the workplace. He writes extensively on the subject, has been featured in various press articles and is an accredited Mental Health First Aider trainer. Richard sits on the steering committee of the Lord Mayor of London’s This is me in the city campaign which aims to increase awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness through personal story telling.

He therefore brings to his work a wide range of interests, skills and perspectives. His approach to any issue is to understand what is happening at the human, emotional level. He also is a confident facilitator. He recognised in byrne∙dean the opportunity to bring together his wide ranging experiences into a more creative and “whole” approach to workplace issues. He plays a key role in the development of our own business as well as supporting clients with theirs.
